There are many challenges facing secondary education today. The current secondary educational systems do not prepare students for post-secondary education; many students have to go through a foundation program to bridge the existing gap between the secondary school and college. Also by the end of G12, many students are clueless when it comes to making wise and conscious career related decisions. Therefore; it is becoming a 21st century necessity to introduce career related courses at the secondary level such as engineering education not jus to promote career awareness, but also to equip the students with the skills required to survive the global competition, and sustain future developments.

Hence, the secondary curriculum has to be redesigned in order to induce technology learning in educational systems and provide required infrastructure and training facilities in the schools. The younger generation has to, no only be aware of the emerging technologies such as new engineering materials and nano-technology, to name a few, but they also need to be trained to handle these technologies and realize their contribution to solving 21st century critical issues such as finding alternative sources of energy and reducing power consumption. Moreover, educators have to integrate technology tools that appeal to their "technology native" students, as part of the student preparation process for the future.

The Institute of Applied Technology (IAT), as one of the Career Technical Education (CTE) stakeholders in the UAE, is leading the quest for technology education by organizing the IAT Technological Education Conference (IAT TEC 2010) on 1-2 March 2010. The focus of the conference is "Secondary Engineering Education" and it aims at shedding the light on the need for CTE in the UAE and exchanging educational best practices in: curriculum design, curriculum contents, accreditation, and engineering articulation in secondary curriculum, instructional methods, assessment tools, and educator professional development.
